Lord Bishop Calls On President Zardari

ISLAMABAD: Lord Bishop Michael Nazir Ali, a British citizen of Pakistani descent, called on President Asif Ali Zardari here on Tuesday.
Lord Michael is the 106th Bishop of Rochester and the first nonwhite Bishop in the Church of England. He heads the Network for Inter Faith Concerns of the Anglican Communion (NIFCON).
Lord Bishop mentioned that purpose of his visit was to pay homage to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto on her first death anniversary.
He praised her as an icon of democracy and stated that her contributions for the promotion of democracy were internationally acknowledged.
The President underlined that one million Pakistanis in the UK were a source of strength for promoting cultural bond between the two countries.
He apprised the Bishop on the Government’s efforts towards fighting extremism and terrorism, its fallout on the economy, constraints in terms of resources and capability and the need for the international support to Pakistan to bridge the resource gap.
He underscored that militants had access to greater resources and therefore the international support to Pakistan should be matching.
They agreed on the need for promoting interfaith dialogue, respect for religions and religious personalities.
The discussion also touched upon the minorities’ rights, blasphemy law, and the issue of death penalty.
